Physician-Assisted Suicide

This subject has really touched my heart and has made me think of my life and others in it in full. I have never had to experience this personally, nor have I known anyone close that has to explain the pain and suffering of those around the patient/loved one.
I am only half way through the Nancy Cruzan article and have tears in my eyes for her family. How awful they must have felt. Mr. Cruzan stated that it was like Nancy died the day of the accident and they were just visiting her body. To watch her lay there and remember how strong and independent she was.
I will keep reading the assigned articles and send more of my thoughts. Then check out my other peer’s blog on the topic.
Thank you Dr. Wendel for starting this class off with this subject. I feel that I am going to gain great knowledge from you, this class, and my classmates.

Its amazing how a story, fictional or nonfictional, can reel you in and make you feel like you are sitting right there. I know that reading some of this information I felt close to the families that have had to make these tough decisions. I can only imagine with Terri Shivo’s family went through.
I also was vey emotional when reading this story. I think it shows the courage of a family to do what is right for their daughter no matter how hard it is or what others may say. In my mind they had to be heartbroken because once they removed the feeding tube Nancy would die and they had no idea if she would feel it or if her death would be painful. I believe what they did was right keeping someone alive on machines and feeding tubes is selfish for the people who do it.
I also felt the pain for this family and think they did something that most could not do. I can only hope if I ever ended up like this my family would make the same choice. Sometimes we are faced with a moral choice and that is what assisted suicide is and even though everything we believe in says no we realize that it is the most loving thing to do. Our bodies are just that bodies and when machines are being used to maintain our body we are already gone. If we legalized the right to die than this family would not have had to sufferas long as they did.
Crystal I too had tears in my eyes from just reading the details about this case. What her dad said about visiting her body is exactly how I felt when my mother in law was in the hospital. It’s a horrible experience and I hope you never have to experience it.
